Nacogdoches couple wants to help men become better fathers

NACOGDOCHES CO., TX (KTRE) - A Nacogdoches County couple is wanting to help make men better fathers.The directors of the Family Network of East Texas are launching a program called Caring Dads. It is one of the few intervention and prevention programs that focus on fathers.
Social worker Thresa Caldwell and her husband, Boris, frequently search for intervention programs that they can offer. Recently, Thresa found one that they like. "The Caring Dads program is an intervention program to provide for fathers who have abused or neglected their children or who have exposed their children to abuse of their mothers."
The program focuses on helping fathers value their children. It is specifically designed for at-risk fathers. "Most of your prevention and intervention programs have targeted the moms when, in fact, that there are a third of those incidents are the fathers," Thresa Caldwell said.
"You have a male and a female providing these services, so it's not just from a woman's point of view or from a man's point of view. It's not to lecture, but again it's to educate," Boris Caldwell added.
Caring Dad participants will be referred to the Caldwells by Child Protective Services, Probation and Parole and the courts. The couple really wants others to self refer. "And that's what we're wanting to see. We're wanting to see fathers who realize they have a problem. They have an issue and before it gets to the level of some of the issues that we've seen that they will step in and say, I need some help," Thresa said.
The Caldwells operate the Family Network of East Texas. Intervention for men wanting to become better fathers is just one more way they hope to make East Texas a better place. "This is to serve East Texas and address those in the immediate area, not just Nacogdoches County, but the surrounding counties too," Boris said.
Fathers are helped to recognize how their behavior impacts their children and their partner. The Caldwells say often dads want to do better, but just do not know how.
The first Caring Dads group will meet November 3rdfrom 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Family Network of East Texas Building, located at 2912 E. Main Street in Nacogdoches. Click here for a link to their website.
